BestBuy.com is selling PS3 games also

BestBuy.com isn't just offering Wii titles for an unconfirmed price with unconfirmed release dates. Nope, they've set up shop offering nine PS3 titles for pre-order. The purported launch titles include: Devil May Cry IV, Final Fantasy VII, Indiana Jones, Killzone 2, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Medal of Honor: Airborne, Resident Evil 5, Tekken 6, and WWE Smackdown! Vs. Raw 2007.
Now, we don't have to remind you that retailers are a notoriously unreliable source of accurate information regarding launch dates and prices. Some of their Wii titles have already been confirmed as not being launch titles, but there they are. That said, what can we extract from this list: $60 prices, in line with the Xbox 360 and higher than Nintendo's status quo $50 price; $60 for Sony-published titles like Killzone 2, unlike Microsoft's lower $50 price; and Final Fantasy VII?! That wasn't just a tech-demo?
At least with BestBuy.com, they're not going after the nice interest-free loan most retailers do. According to their pre-order FAQ:
Q: When will I be charged?
A: You will not be charged at the time you place the pre-order. Only when your item ships will your credit card be charged. If you order additional items along with your pre-order, you will be charged for each item as it ships.
Still not sure why you'd want to pre-order software months before we know anything, but it's your future-money.

Best Buy isn't too reliable when it comes to preorders. I remember they guaranteed that I'd get my copy of Twilight Princess in April even after it was announced that it would be delayed....again.
Rare Hare @ Jun 13th 2006 9:16PM
yeah, i'd definately take this with a grain of salt.
BUT... *please* let final fantasy vii be true. please.
Ed V @ Jun 13th 2006 9:30PM
I hEard that ps3 titles were 69.99 which I believe because the cost of their soon to be obsolete br discs...
Yawn @ Jun 13th 2006 9:33PM
In the June issue of EGM (on page 76), there is a small box indicating that Final Fantasy VII will be remade.
Chris Clark @ Jun 13th 2006 9:46PM
Is there hard evidence from Sony that the games will in fact be the same price as Xbox 360 titles or is this pure speculation?
Thanks in advance.
Drurywalker @ Jun 13th 2006 10:20PM
I definatively saw an article in a gaming mag (i can't
remember which one) that showed screenshots from
several FF7 related games (one for psp, one for the
cell phone, and one for the ps3 called dirge of
cerberus that was based around the infamous three
barreled gun and its wielder) it had an article with
an interview and was totally legit. It heavily hinted
at a possible FF7 tech upgrade.
BklynKid @ Jun 13th 2006 10:30PM
I'm a Xbox 360 fanboy, but if FF7 comes out for PS3 I'll stand on line overnight to buy one on launch day.
Anon @ Jun 13th 2006 10:32PM
The reason BestBuy does this is to help and try to gauge the amount of inventory to have in stock for the release of the PS3 because an overly large amount of expensive stock costs them more in insurance for their warehouses and storerooms.
Viet @ Jun 13th 2006 11:00PM
FINAL FANTASY VII? is it april or something? some kind of prank? hm... im also an xbox lover but dude... if FF7 comes out im gonna camp out, buy a ps3 and 2 copies of FF7!! one for play and one for display. BOOYA!! baby! woOOo!!!
Canadian Geese @ Jun 13th 2006 11:04PM
I have seen pre-order prices for PS3 games ranging from $60 up to $80.
Lithium Mirage @ Jun 13th 2006 11:22PM
Final Fantasy VII?
Keep dreaming.
The ZeroCorpse @ Jun 13th 2006 11:24PM
Thank you, #7.
Sometimes, people seem utterly ridiculous when they try to find some nefarious plot by the big box stores when this kind of thing comes up, when in reality it's just smart planning and standard business practice.
Nmaster @ Jun 13th 2006 11:30PM
You've GOT to be kidding me. Tetsuya Nomura himself said they WERE NOT REMAKING FF7. He said the ideas always being kicked around, but, quote, he "has so many other projects lined up already in the future schedule, so it's almost impossible to think about that and squeeze that in." Get it? IT'S NOT HAPPENING!
Ignorance really pisses me off sometimes...

I can't use the scroll wheel on your front page anymore thanks to the horrendous Flash banners. Get rid of them. BARF!

Best Buy has sunk to a new low. If any of those games would come out at launch it would be honestly be the best video game launch ever.
BallzDeep @ Jun 14th 2006 12:24AM
Best launch ever? Would it? really?
I'm not paying any mind to this Best Buy list.
MidnightPlatinum @ Jun 14th 2006 2:30AM
HEY --> If FF7 gets remade I am a permanent sony fanboy... I wont speak any more bad words about them. However THEY HAVE SAID REPEATEDLY THAT IF DONE IT WOULD BE AN ALMOST 5 YEAR PROJECT OF STAGGERING COST. It sure as heck aint gonna be a launch title so if I preorder it I had better get it Best Buy (laughs). I hope no one is gullible enough to think we'll see a full remake in under 2 years minimum from launch date. I want to believe... trust me. And yes, that would be the best launch ever if all those titles were out... it would murder the whitebox and peewee. But unless that happens my wager is this is gonna be a harder launch then even Sony's most pessimistic team members are thinking. And it sounds like a few of them have been down there in reality lately.
MidnightPlatinum @ Jun 14th 2006 2:36AM
Here's proof that a 2006 or even 2007 release of FFVII is RIDICULOUS:
http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_zdegm/is_200510/ai_n14906775
Best Buy has no idea how many hopes it's getting up.
Ianc02 @ Jun 14th 2006 3:51AM
FF VII for PS3? Wow. Have Best Buy also heard that Super Mario Galaxy and MP3:Corruption are also available for PS3 launch too?
Ken @ Jun 14th 2006 4:27AM

Let's not forget the price benefit. This far back, you can do all sorts of price forecasting as well. If demand is great at a $50 price point prior to launch, why not launch the title at a $60 price point?
daddycool @ Jun 14th 2006 6:20AM
Is this the confirmed MSRP for PS3 games? I was afraid it was going to be higher 65-70.
Tommy V @ Jun 14th 2006 7:23AM
You don't know how lucky you guys are in America! In the UK Xbox 360 games cost about £45 ($83) and I reckon PS3 games will cost at least £50 ($92) because that's what Xbox 360 games started at. I'm going to get a Wii because I cant afford (I'm 16) about £450 ($830) for a PS3 and a game, and that's if the stores do a special deal!
Christopher7xii @ Jun 14th 2006 7:58AM
No, they didn't say FF7 would take 5 years. Here's the quote.
------
“Well, if the team were to decide to remake the game for PS3 with that level of quality,” says FFVII Director Yoshinori Kitase, “we’d have to hire 300 people and it would take about five years.”
------
With that level of quality. They could easily remake FF7 with something of FFXII quality in a much faster time. Eitherway, I know Indiana Jones is only like 20% complete as of E3, so that won't be a launch title. Maybe FF7 redone in 2007? Considering it's usually 6-8months after a jap release for it to hit stateside, even if it was in the works I wouldn't anticipate it until Xmas 2007 at the earliest.
I'm gonna have to get June's issue of EGM and check that out...
Pag @ Jun 14th 2006 9:50AM
Not a single one of these titles is original. Besides Killzone, they're all at least the 4th titles in the franchise.
PS3: more of the same, with better graphics. (Although to be fair, neither the Xbox 360 nor the Wii are much better)
LongshotX @ Jun 14th 2006 10:19AM
I know FF7 was great and all but the story was pretty generic and linear. If anything should be remade it should be FF6. Many gamers never got to experience this title. It would be nice to see an update on this title. But I don't know how you guys could be that die hard to buy a PS3 just because of FF7. I just don't see the justification for this. In the end you'll spend well over $600.00 just to play one game. That's nonsense.
KawF @ Jun 14th 2006 11:40AM
Wait... so you mean that games stored on bluray won't cost ONE BILLION DOLLARS! *dr-evil-voice*
Seriously you people that somehow have imagined the enourmus cost increase for bluray products, where the h*ll do you get your numbers from? A magic hat? There has never been any numbers presented that I've seen on the cost of a pressed bluray disc.
From my guesstimates, its a matter of cents per disc.
mandarin @ Jun 14th 2006 11:59AM
Best buy isnt reliable. They actually get their stuff later than most. Id put a little more faith in Walmart or Target than Best Buy since they are a more bigger company that Sony doesnt want to anger.
This site also provides some amusing storiers about Best Buy.

lefty @ Jun 14th 2006 12:07PM
new release bluray movies cost 40 bucks compared to 20 on dvd. thats why people assume there will be a price increase over 360's dvd games. also a single bluray disc costs 20-25 dollars retail vs a dvd that costs 4.50 thats a huge price diff and some one will pay it. and i assume the devs will pass it on to the consumers. but as with everything u wonlt know till u buy it
doubtful @ Jun 14th 2006 12:15PM
It's probably just a mistake and they meant FFXIII, but if it is true, it's hilarious that SONY would rely on the inexplicable popularity of a decade old mediocre "game" to sell their system.
FF fans can keep their angst-ridden, androgynous interactive movies; I'm going to play games.
32_Footsteps @ Jun 14th 2006 12:44PM
Hey, does anyone else remember how there were flying rumors about FF7 being rereleased on the Playstation 2 with enhanced graphics and the like? Didn't Square even remnder a couple FMVs from FF7 to show off what could be done with the PS2 hardware (similar to how they redid a battle from FF6 to show off what could be done with the N64 at one point)?
Talk about specious rumors.
And LongShotX, you sure about that? FF6 was widely credited with being one of, if not the, best games of the SNES era. It was already rereleased on the original Playstation. A Game Boy Advance remake is already out in Japan and is coming to the US within a year. Many gamers have experienced the title, we already got one update, and we're about to get another. Great game, but hardly a "hidden gem."
Eagle @ Jun 14th 2006 1:34PM

I bet you don't even know what androgynous means...and what "game" are you going to go play? Halo? Mario? FF games are far more involved than either of those two.. .
Don't hate on a series just because it annihilates essentially every other series in total sales...Or maybe they're too hard for you...now THAT would be embarassing.
Marc @ Jun 14th 2006 1:53PM
Hahaha...
They mean to say Final Fantasy XIII I am sure.
By the way, I have never finished even one of the Final Fantasy games. The only RPG I've beat is "Crono Triger" the Playstation remake and if that is one RPG game that desrves a remake is that one.
That said I would surely grab a copy and try to beat it if came out for PS3 no matter when.
lionzub @ Jun 14th 2006 4:21PM
Why do people want FF7 remade so badly? I still have my original version for PS1 and PC, and they work fine. Nothing beats playing the original. A lot of these re-made games steal the thunder because before they had to use their imagination on how to make a game visually wonderful. I think they shouldn't waste people's talent on rehasing old titles.
Christopher7xii @ Jun 14th 2006 7:27PM
You need to check your facts 32_Footsteps...
It was FF8 that was rendered with the emotion engine for PS2, not FF7. FF8 is also WAY less liked by fans and gamers. FF7 sold PS1's, I know tons of people that bought it just to play FF7.
Also another difference is now since the Enix merger, they do a lot of fan-service. Look at all the remakes they've done since Square-Enix was born. It's ridiculous, but I love it.
Another thing, FF5 and FF6 are both still unreleased for the GBA in Japan. They just announced it at E3 as confirmed (for Japan as well), it's nowhere near release there.
As for saying it was supposed to be FFXIII... Why would they list XIII and not XIII Vs as well? Just doesn't make sense, not to mention that title is probably about 3 years off from being released (2009 is my guess, judging by XII's development cycle).
Has anyone checked EGM like mentioned in the first posts?
And for the quote of the thread...
"FF fans can keep their angst-ridden, androgynous interactive movies; I'm going to play games."
--Angst-ridden? Good to know you can type words that you don't know the meanings to. How does that apply to any hero of an FF game outside of Tidus? As for the adrogynous... If you can't tell the difference between males and females of Square games you need your eyes checked bad. And yes... They're games. All that video games are is interactive movies. Mario, Metal Gear, Halo, Half-Life 2, so on and so forth... hence the term "video" game. Then again, I guess if I was an idiot and had no value on strategic thinking, just craving random explosions, rocket launchers and two-minute interactive action fixes, I would have to agree with you. Thank god I prefer to flex my brain from time to time or enjoy an actual storyline with my "interactive movies".

Eagle, Christopher7xii: I'm glad to see my comments about a game were enough to evoke personal attacks from both of you. I appreciate your maturity.
If you want to make assumptions about what kind of a fanboy I am or am not or call me an idiot for my point of view, I think that says more about you than me.
When I mentioned androgynous, I must've hit a nerve. I'm not only talking about the heroes, Eagle, Sephiroth was as ambiguous as they come, and angst-ridden could apply to Cloud, Tidus, Squall; the list goes on and on.
I've played and completed virtually every incarnation of Final Fantasy there has been since Final Fantasy launched on NES. I enjoyed most of them, except VII, VIII, X and X2. One of my favorite games of all time is Tactics Advance: portable and loads of fun.
Unfortunately, I see the series drifting away from what I liked about it's earlier releases, and more towards what I dislike about it.
Christopher7xii, just because they are called video games doesn't mean they are all interactive movies. That is wrong. You can make an argument that FFVII isn't an interactive movie, but that's a flimsy basis for that argument.
To both of you, Eagle and Christopher7xii, I appreciate the disagreement; I know I have an unpopular position. I'm also one of the four people in the entire world who disliked Seinfeld! :) I would, however, and most of the commenters would agree, prefer if you avoid personal attacks and not assault my or anyone else's intelligence.
Thanks
