After receiving an error message about live being temporarily down, I waited a little bit and was able to log in again. However, when i visited my arcade section, I noticed a bunch of games that i had purchased somehow reverted back to "demo" mode. WTF??!! out of thirty games i had purchased, 8 of them "magically" converted back into the free trial mode. anyone else experience this?

It looks like his games were erased and then replaced with trial versions via auto-download. Presumably, he was able to obtain the full versions again without a problem. Did anybody else see their XBLA games get Grinched??

The XBLA glitch that stole Christmas? originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 10 Dec 2006 09:30:00 EST. We tested this development on older HDTV sets with games designed for 720p but not 1080i -- Resistance: Fall of Man, NHL 2K7, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07, and Need for Speed Carbon. Sure enough, the system downshifted all four titles to 480p rather than moving up to 1080i.

The PlayStation 3's competitor, Microsoft's Xbox 360, does upscale 720p games to 1080i if the HD set supports the latter resolution but not the in-between and commonly-employed 720p resolution.

One guy countered (illogically) that he didn't care because 360 controllers are too big for Japanese hands. Apparently he still thinks we're wrasslin' with the Duke, although it might have been the hypothermia talking.

[Thanks Nathan]
PS3 not all that upscale after all originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Nov 2006 01:30:00 EST. Big enough to make your puny DVD player power supply run and hide. Big enough to club a baby seal to death in a pinch. All that's missing to secure its status as the king of gargantuan AC adaptors is a big stand-alone price tag. Enter the Intec Xbox 360 Power AC Adaptor, which, for the Kong-size cost of $100 ( wall plug not included!) adds an internal cooling fan and a few LED lights to your factory power brick, without shaving an ounce off the original's famous form factor. When I first heard about this thing, I assumed Intec was charging power supply snobs a premium for a sleeker, less obtrusive unit, but who was I kidding? This baby is big 'n' beautiful, and it has a fan that supposedly makes your 360 run better. The only question: Is anyone out there a big enough sucker to actually buy it?

[Thanks Chris]
Big bucks for 360 power brick originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 05 Nov 2006 19:00:00 EST. Method 1 has been smacked silly because the vast majority of existing game save files created on the previous update do not work on the Fall update software version. This renders those files useless until unscrupulous members decide to re-upload hundreds of saves based from the new dashboard version. This will most likely take months upon months or possibly never happen for very unpopular games.

Method 2 has been rendered useless as new console specific security is in place. Gamerscore thirsty gamers are taunted with a Corrupt Save message when the bypass method attempts to be used. Obviously, the new security may eventually be cracked by code junkies, but those game saves may also have to be re-uploaded. I'm unsure of any repercussions to method 3. I've always found trading accounts to be supremely idiotic as anyone could keep your account for themselves. Anyway, if anyone has heard if method 3 has been affected, let me know.

Former champ ST TheKing quit the GamerScore race after the upper reaches of the leaderboard became became clogged with fakes, including awfullygood himself (who admits he was cheating just to keep up with the Joneses). Sure Xbox 360 achievements are intangible and useless, but they are fun to earn and these a-hole cheats make a mockery of every pallid kid who spent a three day weekend in the basement going after that final Lumines Live time attack get. For God's sake, if putting endless hours into a crap game like Bomberman gives you a limited sense of accomplishment, stealing a game save must give you even less. Of course, these changes won't stop cheating, just slow it down for a bit. But it does serve as a reminder that you're not entitled to an elite score, unless you're playing that other console.
Fall update curbs GamerScore cheating originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 03 Nov 2006 06:00:00 EST.
I just had the time to quickly start poking around with the 360 dashboard update, and I'm sorry to report that 1080p is broken on the XBR2 via both component and VGA. When I select 1080p in VGA, I get a windowboxed picture with tons of info cut off on both sides and a warning from the TV saying "Invalid Signal--Check Your PC Output". Over component, when I select 1080p I get a screen full of static for 10 seconds before the console reverts to 1080i.

Feh. Since the XBR2 is one of the most high-profile, wildely available 1080p displays on the market, you'd think MS' engineers would find a way to get the two to work together, but noooooo...

While it's outrageous to suggest that MS would intentionally blacklist their rival's most popular HDTVs, it is amusingly ironic -- unless you're staring at a $4000 distorted screen right now. Another patch could be imminent. It's worth pointing out that most people on that thread say they're going to return their Sony set, not their Xbox 360. And, as usual, someone comments that an upscaled 1080i signal is indiscernible anyway.

Sidenote: The general public doesn't have a prayer of grasping this stuff.

Fall update won't play nice with Sony 1080p TVs originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 31 Oct 2006 23:59:00 EST. Perhaps that has something to do with the suspicious (not to mention cool) Gears of War graffiti turning up around his block. This advertising is in the vein of the PSP graffiti campaign that got a lot of press a while back, and it makes sense given that locust are supposed to come up out of the ground. The familiar Gears logo is always accompanied by a cuddly phrase like "Humanity had a nice run." Ali snapped these pics (more after the jump) on his lunch time stroll through the streets of San Francisco, where we assume it's legal to spray paint skulls on the sidewalk. Either way, it has to be confusing for non-gamers, who undoubtedly think the stencils are part of some Rovian plot to contaminate the sewers. Have you checked the sidewalks in your town?
Continue reading GoW graffiti campaign hits San Fran

GoW graffiti campaign hits San Fran originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 31 Oct 2006 21:00:00 EST. The 1080p debate is a rhetorical swamp filled with technical jargon, foggy "real world" benefits, arguments about performance trade-offs and general hype. Now that those of you with TVs capable of 1080p via component or VGA have gotten a look at the 360 in action post-Fall Update, what's your verdict? Is Splinter Cell really 1080p? Is the difference noticable? Is it worth the extra money you paid for your cutting edge HDTV? MS Media and Entertainment Alliance Manager Dean Schonknecht tells MVC that the lack of a selected music store provider means the launch is "way off" meaning Christmas '07, or worse, sometime in '08. The fact that MS never appointed anybody to head up the launch indicates the Zune was never intended to hit Europe any time near November 17 US date. I guess MS loyalists across the pond will just have to spend their money on something else this holiday, like say, an Xbox 360.

[Via Xboxic]
Zune zapped with delays in Europe originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 31 Oct 2006 16:00:00 EST. Some of you obviously know how to carve pumpkins. Richard and I have narrowed down the entries to 10 finalists based on carving skill and originality, which we now present to our readership for a vote. The owner of the top Xbox-O-Lantern will receive a copy of Gears of War courtesy of RockMeTV with slightly less cool prizes for 2nd and 3rd place (XBL Unplugged Vol. 1 and UMK3 respectively). The ballot will close at midnight tonight, with any ties decided by a random drawing, so pick your favorite. This isn't Chicago, so please vote only once. We'll be plugging this post throughout the day to ensure as many participants as possible besides your Mom and friends. Pics are listed after the break in no particular order.
Continue reading Carving contest vote: Pick the best 360 pumpkin [update: cheater!]

Carving contest vote: Pick the best 360 pumpkin [update: cheater!] originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 31 Oct 2006 10:00:00 EST.

Improved visual display of text in themes.

I seriously hope this fix makes a difference because hard-to-read text really discourages the use of themes. This could turn a novelty into something practical. What other less flashy upgrades do you think will have a big impact on your Xbox 360 experience?
Fall Update: Textual healing originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 31 Oct 2006 02:30:00 EST.

Support for upcoming release of XNA Game Studio Express (separate download and subscription required.)

This means that a subscription (should be well under $1000 for the professional edition) will be required to run code on the 360 using the XNA Game Studio Express development tools. As far as I know, there will be no separate subscription for playing "homebrew" games that ultimately make it to XBLA (aside from whatever the devs decide to sell them for), although it does sound like a nefarious idea.
XNA Game Studio Express: Subscription required originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 30 Oct 2006 22:30:00 EST. The update is free and available to all Xbox Live members.

The update, among other things, improves Xbox Live Arcade and Marketplace functions, provides 1080p support, adds a start menu for XNA-developed games, adds HD-DVD player support and over 80 additional functions.

Microsoft is holding a press conference in Japan at which additional information will be provided.

It's widely believed that MS will roll the update out everyhwere at the same time, so that's good news for folks in the US and EU as well. Better yet, Japanese site WatchImpress has pics from the press conference confirming WMV streaming via Windows Media Connect, CD-R/DVD-R and USB thumbdrive.

Hey 1080p, HD-DVD support and more sure beats Smarty Smarts and stale Nestle Crunch bars. Xbox-Scene has a forum post with details on the new device, which should let you back up your 360 hard drive with ease. Datel does come up with some decent stuff and I'd like to thank them for not bombarding us with a stream of press releases and viral ads. But it would help sales if they let people know when they have a new product.
New data transfer solution: Datel Xport 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 30 Oct 2006 01:30:00 EST. It looks like it was an innocent misunderstanding and not an attempt to defraud the nerd public:

Here is the story. I bought the BestBuy pre-order thing - for the shirt. I go home to make sure the shirt is my size, so as I took the shirt out, and laid my Dead Rising game and the gears box on top of my stash, just habit.

A friend came over, and went through my games to find something to play - thus the game went towards the bottom.

I posted this picture in my thread at TeamXbox.

Showing my "addiction" of buying video games. I forgot about the Gears box even being in the middle of the mix. This of course turned huge when I got PM's, comments about how did I get the game already.

I stated I believe 2-3 times in that thread that it was truly the pre-order box that comes with the shirt. I guess no one read or wanted to believe that.

Obviously, Brymo didn't steal anything from GameStop. And we're sorry Richard called you a schmo. I think the universal lust for early copies of Gears of War has everybody on edge right now.
GoW Flickr pic explained originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 30 Oct 2006 00:30:00 EST.
